Vergil is the eldest of twin sons born to the Dark Knight Sparda, and Eva, a human woman. In his mind, this carries a number of connotations, first and foremost being that power is protection, and in order to protect himself, and his last remaining family member (Dante, his twin brother), he will need to hit the 'jackpot'. That jackpot, so to speak, is the power his father sealed away on the other side of the gates of Hell two thousand years previously, in a self-banishment to the human world after defeating Mundus, the prince of Hell.

Vergil is also his father's son. He doesn't deny that which makes him different from everyday humans, and has strived to develop those skills in a very short amount of time. He pulls heavily on the demon side of himself, and while this makes him a ruthless individual with little concern for things like 'feelings', it doesn't strip away his strong sense of honor. Vergil won't harm children, because children are innocent. He doesn't like guns, because he views them as both tacky, and a coward's weapon. If there comes a need for any kind of projectile use, Vergil makes use of the black magic he knows for it, because anything less would be dishonorable.

He feels superior to the human race, and were he basing it on purely physical aspects, he'd be right. He might be faster, stronger, and tougher than humans, with the gifts passed down from his father, but the truth of it is this: Vergil is mentally flawed. He's crazy, and it's debatable whether or not he realizes this. His longing for power goes beyond pure need; it's a flat out obsession. The same goes with his fanatical following of his younger twin brother. He's positively obsessed with Dante, going so far as to stalk him, though the younger twin is most likely unaware of that fact. Vergil would claim it's because he doesn't like to leave anything to chance, and doesn't want to throw a wild card into his personal equation for dominance of the demon world, but he's fooling both his audience, and himself. Pulling so strongly on his demonic side has eaten away at the human parts of his sanity, and left him a carefully concealed madman.

And a lot of this obsession stems from his childhood, no doubt, where Vergil was, if not completely unhappy, then discontent. As a twin, he did share a strong bond with his younger brother, though they fought like all siblings. However, Vergil set his father on a pedestal, as a goal to reach, because he couldn't touch base with his mother. If anything, he felt as though she didn't love him, and through that, felt neglected; instead, he clung to his twin, taking on the 'big brother' role as much for his own sake - to feel needed and wanted - as Dante's own. It's doubtful that Eva ever knew of Vergil's resentment, as it is entirely possible he was mentally unstable before his mother died, and put up a front of indifference even then. One could even go so far as to theorize he was more concerned for Dante's safety than her own, and let her die the night demons attacked their home, to have Dante to himself.

Of course, it depends on how far you want to take that obsession.
